Tzaneen
Tzaneen is the second largest town in the Mopani district of the Limpopo Province. It lies at the foot of the Wolkberg Mountains which reach the Drakensberg Mountains.
The origin of the town’s name is under question with 2 main theories being most probable, tsaneng (Sotho for “gathering place“) and tsana (Sotho for “basket of hills“). The town boasts a subtropical climate and as a result is very fertile. It is famous for its avacodo’s, nuts, magoes, bananas, litchies, coffee, tea and cotton.
Tzaneen is a good base for any tourist wanting explore the rest of the region. It has many great attractions nearby such as one of the biggest Baobab trees in the world. The scenery in the area is particularly stunning and with its ever changing landscapes, from the mountains to quant farms, your camera’s memory will be full before you know it!
Tzaneen also offers other attractions such as the Tzaneen Museum which is a small but fascinating museum. There is a permanent exhibition that is made up of ethnological artifacts of the area. This includes weapons, pottery, beadwork, the largest collection of pole carvings in the country, royal drums from the Rain Queen Modjadji, sacred drums as well as general utensils as used in every day life. Other places of interest include the Tzaneen Dam, Pekoe View Tea Estate, The Vervet Monkey Foundation and the many nature and game reserves within a relatively close proximity to the town., the Kruger National Park to name one.
The town boasts a wealth of accommodation for any tourist on any budget from country lodges to wildlife reserves.
