The Marakele National Park
The Marakele National Park
The Marakele National Park is situated smack bang in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains. Its Tswana name suggests that it is a 'place of sanctuary' for an impressive variety of wildlife due to its location.
It is located between the dry moist regions of South Africa which is why it is so popular with wildlife. The park is great for sight see’ers as the landscape contradicts itself nicely with regal mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valleys; they all give the park so much character. For people who love nature, you will love this park as the rare yellowwood and cedar trees can be found here!
The park is home to all your favourite large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats as well as an amazing variety of birds including what’s probably the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world.
Things to do there include going to the top of the Waterberg massif where the views are beautiful and a must for those who enjoy their surroundings. You can also see the vulture colony where the birds are known to come up quite close (bird watchers dream)! You also have plenty more to see with the rhino, elephants, kudu and other species of buck roaming there!
Accommodation: As most of the park is only accessible with 4x4 vehicles it is understandable that the accommodation consists of Tents; the Tlopi Tented Camp and the Bontle Camping Site!
