Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay is situated on the border of the Eastern Cape Province and the Western Cape Province, and is considered a destination of the famous "Garden Route".
Now affectionally called Plett, the town was originally called “Bahia Formosa” (beautiful bay) by early Portuguese explorers because of its sweeping golden beaches, dramatic rocky peninsula and spectacular views of the surrounding hills and mountains. Plettenberg Bay is a relatively old town, steeped in history from being regularly visited by Portuguese explorers during the 15th and 16th centuries. History buffs can view remnants of their visits such as the remains of the Gonzales Wreck in the town. Other historical places to see in the town are the Old Rectory, built by the Dutch East India Trading company in 1776, and Forest Hall, a privately owned stately home, built in 1864 by William Henry Newdgate.
Plettenberg Bay and the surrounding areas boast a wealth of other activities and places to see. Both sight-see'ers and adrenaline junkies will not be disappointed with the likes of the Bloukrans Bridge and Nature’s Valley being close by. Don’t worry if you get peckish or thirsty on your travels in “Plett” because there are many fine restaurants, café’s and other eateries to choose from in the town. You will be spoiled for choice!
Plettenberg Bay has a lot to offer in terms of accommodation: high-class hotels, homely B&B’s, backpacking hostels, lodges and a wealth of guesthouses.
