Kimberley
Kimberley is known as the capital of South Africa’s Northern Cape Province. It is a city steeped in history and has held great significance in South Africa’s Second Boer War.
However the city is more famed around the World for the discovery of diamonds there, firstly in 1866 and then in 1871. It caused a huge diamond rush, where hundreds of people flocked to join the mines. The city’s mining history has in fact changed the landscape, where there was once a hill there now lies “The Big Hole”, the most famous diamond mine in the world.
Kimberley boasts a wealth of activities and places to see. Like many city’s, there are endless museums and buildings of architectural beauty like churches, famous houses and civic buildings, so make sure that you bring your camera. There are also many other activities in the area such as going on the famous Kimberley Ghost Trail and visiting the Flamingo Farm. The city has many bars and restaurants so whether you want a little fine dining or a pub lunch, you will be catered for.
Kimberley has a lot to offer in terms of accommodation: homely B&B’s, backpacking hostels, lodges and a wealth of guesthouses.
