Margate

Margate is a town situated on the south coast of Kwazulu-Natal. It is a famous seaside resort where tourists flock every year to enjoy the sea, sand and sun and is perfect for a beach holiday.
The town is named after the famous seaside resort in Kent, England by Henry Richardson in 1908. Margate hit the world headlines in 1922 (although this date is often disputed and stated as 1924) when an enormous, white, furry creature (dubbed "Trunko" due to it having an elephantine trunk) was washed up on the beach. Unfortunately the "Margate monster" was too decomposed to be identified accurately.
Located close to Durban and Port Shepstone, it is a perfect base to visit their attractions. In Margate itself there are a lot of activities to keep yourself busy like swimming, snorkling and surfing at its beautiful beaches. Due to its popular location and tourism based infrastructure there is great shopping, pubs, night cubs and restaurants. Margate has everything you need to enjoy a great beach holiday!
Margate has great accommodation on offer from B&B’s to self catering apartments.
